One of Finland’s most iconic confections, Brunberg’s Kiss, celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. The confectionery company Brunberg, based in Porvoo, marks the milestone with a comprehensive visual brand renewal and three special flavours launched during the anniversary year. The first anniversary flavour will arrive in stores in March.
Brunberg is Finland’s only manufacturer of Kisses, but similar confections have been enjoyed around the world for centuries. The Danes invented the flødebolle, or cream bun, as early as 1807. Later, the cream filling was replaced with whipped egg white to improve shelf life for the product.
Brunberg began producing Kisses at its factory in 1951. Since then, these chocolate-covered treats have become an essential part of Finland’s confectionery heritage. Over the decades, the taste and size have remained largely unchanged, while production methods have evolved with time.
Kisses are Brunberg’s largest product category and sell particularly well in the company’s own stores. They are produced year-round at the factory, with production increasing further during campaign periods and peak seasons. Significant investments have been made over the years in the production line to meet strong demand.
The original flavour was vanilla, which long remained Finns’ favourite. Today, strawberry is by far the best-selling variant. Seasonal flavours have also grown in popularity as consumers look for variety alongside the classic options.
Alongside the classic flavours, Brunberg continuously develops new flavours, while carefully listening to consumer wishes. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Kisses, entirely new special flavours will be introduced. The first anniversary flavour, Green Apple, will be available in stores in March. The flavour has already sparked considerable interest and Brunberg has prepared for high demand.
“Apple has been one of the most requested flavours, so for the anniversary year we decided to make that wish come true. There will also be other special flavours that differ significantly from the regular range, but more about those later,” says Piia Hyttinen, Product Developer at Brunberg.
The remaining flavours will be revealed throughout the year, and they also are expected to become major hits.
As part of the anniversary celebration, Brunberg is also renewing its brand. The update, which includes both visual identity and verbal communication, aims to communicate even more clearly the brand’s iconic status and the uncompromising quality of Finland’s oldest confectionery manufacturer.
The ambitious renewal is designed to ensure Brunberg remains relevant to candy lovers of all ages. The new look will be prominently visible on packaging, across social media, in Brunberg’s own stores, and in retail. The renewal will be carried out in collaboration with strategy and design agency Kuudes.
“We took inspiration not only from Brunberg’s iconic products and long history, but also from the memories that nearly every Finn associates with Brunberg. Our goal was to strengthen the brand’s already strong reputation while introducing something surprising and new,” says Piëtke Visser, Creative Director at Kuudes.
Brunberg’s CEO Katarina Enholm describes the choice of packaging materials as follows:
“We chose brown cardboard because it evokes traditional craftsmanship, a classic look and a refined elegance that has been part of Kisses from the very beginning. We wanted a package that feels dignified while also supporting our principles for sustainable material choices.”
